[glow=red,2,300]Advice on Self Defense and abduction [/glow]
Advice that many safety experts give to help improve your odds of surviving something an abduction. But before I start, remember this important disclaimer: Trust your own instincts. If your gut tells you to do something different, it's probably right. And remember that there are no guarantees. If you survive an attack, then you did the right thing.
And here's another disclaimer, almost as important: Never use this advice to find fault with a victim who did something different! Always remember that in these situations, 100% of the blame lies with the perpetrator. None -- not even the tiniest little bit -- lies with the victim.
[glow=red,2,300]Disrupt The Perp's Plan [/glow]
In these cases, the attacker always has a plan. It is very detailed, and he has rehearsed it in his mind thousands of times. This gives him a major advantage over his target, who is usually taken by surprise. So if you are attacked, realize that the attacker has a plan, and do whatever you can to ruin it. Every perp is different, but some may abandon the attack and run away if his plan is disrupted in one or two ways.
Almost always, the perp's plan is to take you away from where you are, quickly and quietly. He wants to take you someplace he has prepared, where he is in control. There are two ways to disrupt this:
Don't let him take you to a second location. Easier said than done, since he is ready and possibly armed, and you're taken by surprise. But realize that right here, right now, he is the most vulnerable. You will never have a better chance of foiling him than right now. Some women hope that if they cooperate, they won't make their attacker mad, and he'll treat them better. This almost never works. Don't cooperate. Don't do what he says. Throw him off, disrupt his plan, in any way possible.
Not quickly and quietly -- slowly and loudly. The last thing your attacker wants is to attract attention, to have people intervene, to even have someone get a good look at him or his car or anything that is happening. So scream! Yell FIRE! Curse! Bite! Stomp! Gouge! Yell NO! Break glass, scatter trash, make a scene, yell to strangers. Do whatever you can to slow him down, to stall, to attract attention, to hurt him. One yell, one second of delay, could result in a witness describing the attacker to a police artist, or a description of the car, or a license plate number.
Play The Odds
I heard this on Oprah, so it must be true. A law enforcement officer described a scenario where the attacker has a gun, and it made sense to me, so I'll paraphrase as best I can.
Basically, if the attacker succeeds in getting you into his car, and to his prepared place, your chances for survival are very poor. I think the official said "zero percent." So resist getting into his car however you can, even if he has a gun. Try to break free and run away. If the attacker has a gun, what are the chances he'll use it? Maybe 50-50. If he fires his gun, what are the chances he'll hit you? Again, maybe 50-50. If he hits you, what are the chances that the wound is serious or mortal? Once again, maybe 50-50. That works out to a twenty percent chance of being killed, maybe less. That's much better than the one hundred percent chance of being killed that this officer said you had if the attacker gets you into the car.
Lastly -- and I didn't hear this part on Oprah -- if you resist and run and make him shoot, the chances of him being seen and identified are much, much higher than if he makes a quick and quiet exit with you in the car. And at least people will know what happened to you.
Click the links in this article and in the link box for more details on how to resist when you're attacked. And practice it mentally, so you don't have to formulate an entire strategy in a millisecond.
About the same time as Dru's abduction, another Minnesota girl was knocked unconscious and put into a car. She regained consciousness, and when her attacker stopped at a traffic light, she jumped out and got away. This is an excellent example of keeping your head and seizing an opportunity.
Remember that in a moving car, everyone is vulnerable. There may be opportunities that depend on how thoroughly you are restrained. You may be able to lunge sideways and forwards, and blow the horn by butting it with your forehead. If your hands are free, you can jerk the steering wheel. If your feet are free, you can stomp on the accelerator. Your attacker has to use at least one hand to drive the car. He is limited in his ability to fend you off.
If you can cause an accident, you have disrupted his plan by destroying his method of transportation, and probably have produced several witnesses.

As you no doubt know, however, traffic accidents are dangerous. Choose your chance as carefully as you can.
Never forget the option of directly attacking your attacker. Gouge out his eyes, crush his throat, jam a pencil through his eardrum, use your belt to garrote him. If you accidentally get a finger in his mouth, don't pull back -- try to shove your entire hand down his throat.
A few years ago, I sprained my back. That incident made me realize how difficult it is to get out of a car. If you are out of the car, and he is getting out of the car to attack, realize that he is using much of his strength and balance just to get out. If you decide that fighting is better than running, don't let him out of the car. Shove him back in. If there's a rock handy, hit him with it. If there's a stick or branch, club him over the head, or jab him in the face. Car doors are hard and heavy. Kick the door closed onto his head, and keep slamming it into him. And, of course, make as much noise as you can.
If you are in the trunk, kick out a taillight and wave your hand or foot through it. Any driver behind the car will see this. Don't be timid; kick the light as hard as you can; they pop out pretty easily.
Another caution: don't over-estimate your fighting ability. If you have a chance to get away, don't don't don't stay to fight!
This is all pretty violent-sounding, but I won't apologize. If he's forced you into his car, it's him or you.
Make it you.

In the meantime, there are other things you can do. Advocate for better laws to protect women and children. Press for better laws dealing with sex offenders. Make these issues part of your voting platform, and insist that every political candidate support them. And teach your daughters and sons to defend themselves.
One last thing: keep perspective. Stranger-abductions and stranger-rapes are much less common than abductions, rapes, and battering committed by friends or family members. The crazed lunatic, the psycho in a ski mask hiding in the shrubbery, they get a lot of media attention, but they are rare! The majority of violence against women happens in the woman's home, and is committed by her father or husband or other close relative.
So advocate for better laws to protect these women too. And push for improved funding of women's crisis centers.
Make it one of your most important voting issues. It's one of the best things you can do for women.
