[glow=red,2,300] The missing ingredient in ending domestic violence[/glow] October 11, 2006 With so many people working to help victims of domestic violence, including advocates, attorneys, police officers and judges, you'd think it wouldn't be a problem anymore. But it is. There are more than 1,000 reported cases in Carson City each year, and more than 30,000 statewide. Part of the reason is that not enough regular citizens get involved, and that sends a message of tolerance. Many victims need the encouragement of neighbors and friends to help break through the barrier of shame and fear that entraps them. Sometimes it takes a call to police that victims cannot make themselves. You won't be helping just the victim, but their children who are likely to continue that behavior in future generations and in turn pass it on to their children. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but you don't have to wear a purple ribbon to stop domestic violence. You only have to care enough to help victims find their way out. Here are some phone numbers to help: National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-7233 Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence 775-828-1115 or 800-230-1955. www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20061011/OPINION/110110059
