"Moms, Dads Fight For 'Jessica's Law'"
Tennessee motorcyclists have joined forces to protect children from sexual predators. Tennessee does not have a version of this Jessica’s Law on the books. The law would require a mandatory 25-year prison term for a first time sex offender whose victim is under 13 years of age.
Now, a motorcycle enthusiast is asking to Tennesseans to join the cause and has traveled 3,300 miles, made dozens of stop and received 10's of thousands of signatures to do so. "I’ve zigzagged every little pig path, small town road I could get on. I stopped in towns, restaurants, and just anywhere I stopped for gas, I took the petition and got it......signed,” said Mark Norman who is taking a stand for children like nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford, who was reportedly kidnapped from her Florida bedroom, repeatedly raped, then murdered by repeat sex offender John Couey.
Norman asked, “How could a twice convicted sex offender who had raped two little girls already be out on the street to do what he did to that little girl for two days?”
The crime, while committed hundreds of miles away, is hitting close to home for Tennessee bikers, also moms and dads. Latrisha Norman said, “Everybody has kids. Everybody has nieces, nephews, grand kids, we got to protect them. If we don't who will?"
They’re learning, however, the road ahead could be a little rough. "I've learned if you're dealing with judges, you don't want to give up the power. Mandatory sentencing tends to take a lot of power away from a judge. I've learned if you're dealing with a politician all they want to talk to you about is money." The bikers don’t plan to stop, saying you cannot put a price tag on protecting an innocent child.
Governor Phil Bredesen's office has written Norman and told him the administration just spent $2 million on GPS tracking devices for sex offenders. The program is just beginning. Jessica's Law would take that step a little further and sex offenders would spend more time behind bars, before they receive their GPS bracelets.
In addition to signing his petition, thousands have logged on to Norman's Web site, nomorechildpredators.org and signed the petition online. You can also sign petition even if not from this State and encourage all to do so.
